PG County to open 2 schools for immigrant students

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County plans to open two new high schools in 2015 specifically designed to help recent immigrant students.

The school system’s chief executive, Kevin Maxwell, and immigrant advocacy group CASA of Maryland announced Tuesday that they have received a $3 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to fund the schools.

The high schools will be geared to help students who are struggling academically.

The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/1kvlqgo ) that one of the schools will serve students in Langley Park, which is home to a large population of Central American immigrants. The other school will be for recent immigrants and refugees from around the world.

Langley Park currently does not have its own high school.
