OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has enacted regulations on water jetpacks, which are becoming popular in Ocean City.

The Daily Times (http://delmarvane.ws/1oEbTF7 ) reports riders must pass a written test, can’t use the devices in canals or areas where people congregate and can’t fly more than 10 feet above water. They limit riders to age 16 or older, require at least 6 feet of water below and order jetpack companies to outfit riders with bright orange flags. People operating the devices must steer clear of bridges, moorings, piers and pilings.

The rules took effect June 20 for 180 days. During that period, state and local law enforcement are keeping tabs on the resort’s watersports businesses. The department may hold a hearing in January, and some rules could change.
