Stock ended mostly lower Tuesday as investors considered a new set of corporate earnings and the Federal Reserve’s latest assessment of the U.S. economy. In remarks to Congress, Fed Chair Janet Yellen raised the possibility the Fed could raise its key short-term interest rate sooner than currently projected.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 5.26 points, or 0.03 percent, to close at 17,060.68.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 3.82 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,973.28.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 24.03 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,416.39.

For the week:

The Dow gained 116.87 points, or 0.7 percent.

The S&P 500 rose 5.71 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq rose 0.90 points, or 0.02 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 484.02 points, or 2.9 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 124.92 points, or 6.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 239.80 points, or 5.7 percent.
