Mickelson just as motivated to win another Open

HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Phil Mickelson says he’s just as motivated to win another British Open after capturing the claret jug a year ago.

The defending champion addressed the media Monday at Royal Liverpool.

Mickelson has not won since his victory at Muirfield, where he closed with a brilliant 66. But he’s eager to turn that around at the course in northwest England, saying he’s looking to create “some new memories, some new opportunities.”

While Lefty had admittedly struggled, especially with his putter, he doesn’t buy into the theory that he’s on the downside of his career at age 44. In fact, he believes “the next five years are going to be some of the best of my career.”

Mickelson also welcomed Tiger Woods back to major golf, saying everyone benefits when he plays.
