CHICAGO (AP) — Joel Quenneville and Kevin Dineen are together again.
Dineen was hired Monday as an assistant coach to Quenneville with the Chicago Blackhawks. They were teammates with the Hartford Whalers for six seasons from 1984 to 1990.
“Kevin brings proven leadership qualities, having served as an alternate captain and captain for several of his teams during his 19-year NHL career,” Chicago general manager Stan Bowman said in a release. “He will bring another well-respected voice to our coaching staff and we look forward to his contributions to our team.”
Dineen, 50, coached Canada’s women’s hockey team to a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics. He was the head coach for the Florida Panthers for two-plus seasons before being fired last fall.
“The measure of success is very high in Chicago,” Dineen said. “I look forward to supporting the coaching staff and working with some of the best players in the National Hockey League.”
Dineen replaces Jamie Kompon, who became general manager and coach of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, filling the void left by Mike Johnston when he took the head job in Pittsburgh.
Dineen had 355 goals and 405 assists in 1,188 NHL games.
