Body found near CA cove where diver went missing

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a body found floating in the water off a Southern California cove is that of a young man who went missing after diving off a cliff.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s authorities said the body was that of 18-year-old Joseph Sanchez.

Sanchez was dragged underwater Wednesday after he dove into the ocean Wednesday from Abalone Cove below Rancho Palos Verdes. A group of his friends told authorities the water was too rough for them to reach him.

Authorities say lifeguards have made more than 50 rescues this month in the area known as the “washing machine.” Strong currents that flow into the cove create a blowhole in the back of a cave that tosses divers around.

Sanchez’s body was found about 50 yards from where he went missing.
