Storm causes part of US 58 to close to traffic

FRANKLIN, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a severe thunderstorm has resulted in U.S. 58 closing down between Franklin and Capron.

Police say a tornado may have touched down Thursday afternoon, causing storm damage along the highway and on other roads in the area.

Authorities are working with the Virginia Department of Transportation to remove debris and trees off the roadway, as well as disabled vehicles.

Police say the area was also experiencing golf-ball sized hail.
