Smoke, noise after cover touches Metro third rail

WASHINGTON (AP) — Metro says there was a loud noise and smoke when a covering over the third rail touched the rail itself at a station on the National Mall.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says it happened around 2:42 p.m. at the Smithsonian station. It wasn’t clear why the cover came into contact with the rail, but no one was injured.

Stessel says the station, which is on the orange and blue line, is open, though the incident caused some delays.
