Florida’s Whitney sets world junior 200 record

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Florida teen Kaylin Whitney broke the world junior record by running the 200 meters in 22.49 seconds at the U.S. junior national track and field championships Sunday.

The 16-year-old Whitney, who just finished up her sophomore year in high school, broke the world 17-and-under mark of 22.58 set by Marion Jones in 1992. Whitney also surpassed the prep low low-altitude mark of 22.51, set by Allyson Felix at the 2003 Mount SAC Relays.

Whitney’s mark was the eighth-fastest time by a woman at any level this year. It qualifies her for the IAAF World Junior Championships, also at Eugene’s Hayward Field, in two weeks.

She also set a high school record of 11.10 in the 100 on Saturday.
