US women’s national team defeats Brazil 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Jordan Larson Burbach had 16 points, including an ace to put the match away, and the U.S. women’s national team beat Brazil 3-1 on Saturday night in the USA Volleyball Cup.

Kelly Murphy and Kim Hill each added 15 points in the 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 25-29 victory at UC Irvine’s Bren Event Center.

The United States, ranked No. 2 in the world, face the top-ranked Brazilians again Sunday night at USC’s Galen Center.

Fe Garay had 16 points for Brazil, which has won the past two Olympic gold medals by besting the United States in the championship matches both times.

Murphy’s cross-court winner capped the first set for the United States, but surrendered the second set to Brazil despite saving three set points.

After the third-set victory, the United States built a 10-6 advantage before taking the match.
