6 Jewish suspects arrested in slaying of Palestinian teen; killers had ‘nationalistic’ motives

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli police official says six Jewish suspects have been arrested today in the death of a Palestinian teenager whose death has set off violent protests.

Israeli police and the Shin Bet security agency say the suspects are being interrogated. However, the teen’s mother says the arrests bring her no peace. She says Israeli extremists should be rounded up like Palestinians are.

Palestinians say Mohammed Abu Khdeir was killed in retaliation for the earlier deaths of three Israeli teens. Israeli officials say they believe Abu Khdeir’s killers acted out of “nationalistic” motives.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is condemning the killing and appealing for calm. He says Israel will not allow extremists from any side “to inflame the region and cause bloodshed.”

Netanyahu is also accusing Palestinian leaders of tolerating incitement. The case has touched off violent protests in Arab sections of Jerusalem and northern Israel over the past several days.
