Jackets retain Savard, sign Penguins’ Gibbons

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman David Savard to a two-year contract a day after adding free-agent center Brian Gibbons.

The 23-year-old Savard scored five goals and had 10 assists in 70 games last season. The third rounder in the 2009 draft ranked fourth on the club in blocked shots with 81. He had four assists in six Stanley Cup playoff games against the Penguins.

The 26-year-old Gibbons, signed on Friday to a one-year, two-way NHL-AHL contract, had five goals and seven assists last season in 41 games for Pittsburgh. He had two goals and an assist in eight playoff games last season.
