Prosecutors demand trial for wife of Czech ex-PM

PRAGUE (AP) — Prosecutors are opposing a suspended sentence given to the wife of former Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas for abuse of office, a case that brought down his government.

A Prague court convicted Jana Necasova without a trial based on evidence provided by prosecutors, but a full trial must now be held.

Necas’ government collapsed last year after prosecutors alleged Necasova — then Necas’ mistress and his chief of staff — ordered the military intelligence agency to spy on Necas’ estranged wife.

Court spokeswoman Alena Novotna said Monday the court also ruled two former heads of the military intelligence agency didn’t commit a crime, but possibly a misdemeanor, while an intelligence agent was acquitted.

Prosecutor Ivo Istvan says the prosecutors will appeal the ruling, meaning all will face a proper trial.
