I-95 bridge project completed early, under budget

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia highway officials say the restoration of 11 bridges on Interstate 95 in the Richmond area was completed three months early and $16 million under budget.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1qEfmqJ ) that a major reason for the efficient completion of the project was the off-site construction of concrete components. Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Lindsey LeGrand says the sections were cast in a work yard in Hanover County and moved into place like puzzle pieces. The biggest piece of the puzzle was a bridge in Richmond that required 88 pre-cast bridge sections.

The project, which began in September 2010 and ended up costing $90 million, covered a seven-mile stretch of I-95 in Richmond and Henrico County that handles nearly 160,000 vehicles a day.
