Science panel says only modest progress made in Everglades

MIAMI (AP) — A report from a prestigous scientific group says there’s only been “modest” progress in restoring the Florida Everglades.

The National Research Council says while there has been progress, a number of factors are slowing efforts to restore the fragile “river of grass” west of Miami. Funding has not been consistent and projects need to be expedited to prevent degradation of the ecosystem.

The Congressionally-mandated report says sea level rise has already increased saltwater intrusion into the freshwater Everglades, another reason to accelerate restoration projects.
