Phillies place Ruiz on 7-day DL

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the seven-day disabled list because of concussion-like symptoms Friday before their game against the Atlanta Braves.

Ruiz was hit in the head with a pitch by Miami’s A.J. Ramos in the 11th inning of Philadelphia’s 5-3, 14-inning victory on Thursday night.

Ruiz crumpled to the ground after being drilled on the helmet around the left ear. He quickly bounced to his feet and jogged to first, waving off the Phillies’ trainer. Ruiz stayed in the game, running the bases in the 11th, and caught three more innings. He is batting .257 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 66 games this season.

To replace Ruiz, the Phillies called up catcher Koyie Hill from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and designated outfielder Zach Collier for assignment to make room for Hill on the 40-man roster.
