PITTSBURGH (AP) — New York Mets third baseman David Wright was scratched from the lineup Friday night against Pittsburgh because of a sore left shoulder that’s been nagging him for a couple of weeks.
Wright will travel back to New York on Saturday for an MRI. He first started feeling pain in the shoulder after stealing a base June 12 against Milwaukee at Citi Field.
“I did something to my shoulder. It was just something I could play through and feel productive out there,” Wright said. “It was not an issue, but then last night on a couple different occasions I seemed to re-aggravate it. It got worse. I was hoping to be able to push through it, but they obviously shut that down.”
Eric Campbell replaced Wright at third base Friday night, and Daniel Murphy was dropped one slot in the lineup to fill Wright’s regular spot in the No. 3 hole.
A seven-time All-Star, Wright went through a rough slump this month but fought his way out of it. He is riding a 10-game hitting streak and has an RBI in eight of his last nine games.
Still, it’s been a subpar season so far for Wright. He is batting .277 with six home runs and 41 RBIs in 79 games.
“We’ll follow the protocol like normal,” Wright said. “I’ll head back for an MRI and hopefully it would just be some rest and an injection. Hopefully, I’ll be back in a couple days.”
