FLOYD, Va. (AP) — A gay pride march is set Saturday in Floyd, a tiny southwest Virginia town that in recent years has become a haven for artists, musicians and people looking to get back to nature.

Local gay rights activist Wolf Cherrix is organizing the event. He says he expects more than the approximately three dozen people who participated in last year’s inaugural march.

Cherrix says the event has extra meaning this year because of the February court decision striking down Virginia’s gay marriage ban. An appeal of that ruling is pending. Cherrix says some local same-sex couples plan to make symbolic gesture by going to the courthouse Friday to apply for a marriage license.

The march begins Saturday afternoon at the Floyd Post Office.
