Historic estate in Surry sold at auction

SPRING GROVE, Va. (AP) — A historic estate in Surry County has been sold at auction for $1.4 million.

The 309-acre Four Mile Tree was sold Thursday to an anonymous bidder. The estate’s manor home and a caretaker’s cottage are both on the National Register of Historic Places.

Real estate broker Bill Londrey told The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/TBEJxp ) that the identity of the buyer will be made public when the sale is finalized.

About three dozen people were present for the auction, including two who arrived in a helicopter. The auctioneer started the bidding at $4 million.

The property was claimed in a 1625 land grant. The manor home was built around 1745.
