5 people shot at Massachusetts birthday party

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Police say five people have been treated for gunshot wounds after a conflict at a 21st birthday party in Massachusetts erupted in gunfire.

The shootings occurred at the party at a home in Lowell at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Capt. Kelly Richardson says three men and two women were hurt. She says their injuries do not appear life-threatening.

A woman shot in the chest and a man struck in the leg were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Three other victims were brought to the hospital in private vehicles.

No names or ages were immediately available.

Neighbors say they thought they heard fireworks before realizing it was gunfire. One neighbor told The Sun of Lowell he heard seven gunshots in succession.

There was no word on arrests.
