Sterling man wins $1 million in Mega Millions

WASHINGTON – A Sterling, Virginia, resident who thought he had won just a few dollars on a Mega Millions ticket won a few more dollars than he thought.

$1 million, to be exact.

Walt Plummer, a cabinet maker, received his prize from the Virginia Lottery Wednesday at the 7-Eleven at 46141 Woodshire Drive, in Sterling. The odds of winning $1 million in the Virginia Lottery is 1 in about 18.5 million.

Plummer plans to help his family and save for retirement.

Plummer’s winning drawing was Friday, June 13 — just eight days after a Powerball ticket sold in Sterling won $1 million. The winnings from that ticket have not been claimed.
