Va. National Guard members to deploy to Kuwait

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — About 70 Virginia National Guard members are preparing to deploy to Kuwait.

The soldiers are assigned to the Virginia Beach-based 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 529th Regional Support Group. They departed Sunday for Fort Hood, Texas, where they will undergo mobilization training for 30 to 45 days.

While in Kuwait, the soldiers will operate as a mission command headquarters. They will plan and execute combat sustainment support for U.S. and coalition forces in Kuwait and the surrounding region.

The Virginia National Guard says this is the unit’s second deployment. The 529th previously deployed to Afghanistan in March 2010.
