PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Portsmouth police have identified a man who died while wading in the Elizabeth River.

Police tell media outlets that 45-year-old James E. Wofford Sr. of Hampton entered the water with his 4-year-old son on his shoulders on Monday evening.

Wofford’s sister also was wading in the water. She told police she turned around and saw the boy struggling in the water. She pulled him to safety but didn’t see Wofford.

Emergency crews recovered Wofford’s body around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
