NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenya’s top opposition leader says a statement by the country’s president that local political networks were responsible for two days of killings that left 60 people dead trivialized the massacre.

Raila Odinga, the country’s former prime minister, said Wednesday that a statement by President Uhuru Kenyatta that recent attacks on Kenya’s coast were not carried out by the Somali militant group al-Shabab went against the conclusions of security experts and foreign governments.

Kenyatta on Tuesday said political leaders were behind the killings, an insinuation that most political observers in the country said was an accusation against Odinga.

Odinga on Wednesday said the president’s statement trivialized a very serious national disaster. He also criticized Kenyatta and his deputy for not having visited the region after the Sunday and Monday night killings.
