TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — An international rights group has urged the forces of a renegade general and those of rival Islamic extremist militias to stop “reckless shelling” in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi.

In a statement Tuesday, Amnesty International said that the shelling by forces allied to Gen. Khalifa Hifter and militias like the Ansar al-Shariah extremist group has killed and injured dozens and forced hundreds to flee.

Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa deputy director, said: “Libyans are increasingly paying the price of reckless attacks with heavy weapons in residential areas that kill and injure people who are not posing an immediate threat, including those trying to treat the injured.”

Hifter has vowed to crush Islamist militias and has rallied support from army units.
