Italy captain Buffon, De Sciglio still injured

MANGARATIBA, Brazil (AP) — Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and fullback Mattia De Sciglio are still injured and it’s not clear whether either will return in time for Friday’s World Cup match against Costa Rica.

Italy physician Enrico Castellacci says “I really can’t offer a precise prognosis. It’s going to be from day-to-day whether they play or not.”

Both players missed the 2-1 win over England on Saturday.

Buffon hurt his left ankle and knee slightly during the final pre-match training session and De Sciglio strained a leg muscle.

Castellacci says that for Buffon he is “optimistic for a fairly quick recovery,” while De Sciglio is still not in condition to train.

Salvatore Sirigu replaced Buffon against England and Giorgio Chiellini played for De Sciglio at left back.
