Officials seize 47 turtles at Prague airport

PRAGUE (AP) — Czech officials say airport customs authorities have seized 47 endangered turtles that a foreign national smuggled from Asia.

Customs official Sarka Miskovska said Wednesday the turtles and two turtle eggs were hidden in two plastic boxes in a bag of a 47-year-old foreigner. They were revealed by an X-ray scanner at Prague’s Vaclav Havel Airport.

Jana Rambouskova of the Czech Environmental Inspectorate said the black-breasted leaf turtles that live in Asia were in poor condition and two of them were dead.

The animals were transported to Prague’s zoo for treatment.
