WASHINGTON — Are you tired of your average 5K and don’t mind getting muddy? The Run Amuck Race, hosted by the Marine Corps Marathon, is for you.

The race, which will be held Sunday on the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, consists of 21 challenging obstacles over a mud-filled, four-mile course.

Run Amuck is part of the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) event series, held annually through November. MCM (and consequently Run Amuck) started in 2008 as a way to promote its mission of physical fitness and community goodwill, says public relations coordinator Tami Faram.

Faram says this year’s course has a new starting line and more than 2,000 participants. After the race, showers will be provided courtesy of the Quantico Fire Department because, Faram says, “What could be better than finishing your run with an instant shower?”

Other festivities after the race will include live music, beer and food.

Those a little nervous about running should have no fear, Faram says: MCM staff and Marines will be monitoring the course, “assisting volunteers and working everything from packet pickup to baggage claim at our events.”

The race is not just for young people in the area; participants will also come from all over the country.

Registration is $45 for Run Amuck and $25 for Mini Run Amuck. The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
