WASHINGTON — It’s a law that’s been on the books for 12 years in Virginia and it is the law in all 50 states — but still drivers might now know about it.

That’s why this year, Virginia is declaring all of June “Move Over” Awareness Month.

The “Move Over” law requires drivers to move over a lane, if they can do it safely, when police, emergency personnel, highway maintenance or tow trucks are pulled over to the side of the road with their lights flashing.

If drivers can’t move over safely, the law requires them to slow down and pass cautiously.

The Virginia State Police and VDOT have launched a new public service announcement to help spread awareness about the law.

Traffic-related fatalities were the leading cause of law enforcement deaths nationwide in 2013.
