Dodgers coach Valentin hit near eye by stray ball

DENVER (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers assistant batting coach John Valentin was struck by a ball near his left eye as he worked with players in the batting cage before Saturday’s game at Colorado.

The ball apparently ricocheted off the netting and hit Valentin. A preliminary examination showed no damage to the eye, and Valentin was taken to a hospital to undergo a CT scan.

Valentin is a former major league shortstop. He has been with the Dodgers organization for the past seven years, including the last two as the team’s assistant batting coach.
