Man seen driving wrong way on road killed in crash

WALDORF, Md. (AP) — Maryland State Police say a man whom a trooper saw drive the wrong way on a highway in Charles County was killed in a crash as he sped away from the trooper.

It happened about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday on Smallwood Drive in Waldorf. Troopers say 48-year-old Gerard V. Hall of Waldorf was traveling east in the westbound lanes.

Police say Hall pulled into a parking lot and drive back onto Smallwood Drive, traveling east in the eastbound lanes.

Authorities say a trooper activated his cruiser’s emergency lights in an effort to stop the vehicle, but Hall sped away. Officers say he traveled straight through a T-intersection and struck a tree.

Hall died at a local hospital.
