Man held after woman is beaten in carjacking try

NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Delaware State Police have arrested a Maryland man they say beat a woman and tried to carjack her vehicle.

It happened about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Hilton Hotel in Newark. Police say a woman was standing next to her car when a man approached her, said he had a gun and tried to force her into the vehicle.

Troopers say the woman ran away, but fell, and the man banged her head on the curb and dragged her back to the vehicle. Police say the man forced the woman into the driver’s seat, got in behind her and put the car in reverse.

Officers say the woman jumped out and escaped.

Twenty-year-old Datwan Nelson of Baltimore surrendered to troopers. He is charged with attempted carjacking.
