VERONA, Va. (AP) — Grandma Moses is being honored in Virginia, where the prolific artist lived for 18 years.

A state historical marker will be dedicated Thursday in Verona. Anna Mary Robertson Moses was known to the world as Grandma Moses for her folk art.

Moses and her husband, Thomas, arrived in Augusta County as newlyweds in 1887. They eventually purchased Mount Airy, a Federal-style house in Verona. The house and the farm were portrayed in at least three of her works.

Of her 1,600 paintings, at least 38 depict scenes of rural life in the Shenandoah Valley and Staunton.

The Moses family eventually moved to upstate New York, where Grandma Moses launched her painting career when she was in her late 70s. She died in 1961 at the age of 101.
