Israeli forces kill Palestinian who shot at them

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says troops shot and killed a Palestinian man after he opened fire at them at a West Bank checkpoint.

The military says a police officer at the crossing was wounded in the exchange.

The incident Tuesday comes days after Israel says its forces caught a suicide bomber en route to an attack. He was stopped at the same checkpoint where Tuesday’s shooting occurred, in the northern West Bank.

The violence comes as the Palestinian militant Hamas and the western-backed Fatah formed a unity government on Monday. Israel has denounced the alliance, saying it is a hindrance to peace.
