CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — More than 70 workers at Carl Zeiss Vision Inc.’s eyeglass laboratory in Chesterfield County are losing their jobs.

Carl Zeiss Vision spokesman Jeff Hopkins tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/S1Myve ) that the company is consolidating work into labs in Portland, Oregon, and Tijuana, Mexico.

Hopkins says the Chesterfield lab will no longer add prescriptions and coatings to eyeglasses.

The company gave 73 workers at the lab a 60-day layoff notice on Friday.

Hopkins says the lab’s remaining 25 workers will continue to put lenses into frames, take orders and conduct final inspections.

He says similar downsizings have occurred at other Carl Zeiss Vision labs across the country over the past two years.
