Public input sought on cleanup of 4 Va. waterways

ROSELAND, Va. (AP) — The public has an opportunity to weigh in on a plan to clean up four waterways in Nelson and Amherst counties.

A 30-day public comment period on the plan will end on June 16.

The plan lists voluntary programs aimed at reducing bacteria levels in the Tye and Piney rivers, Hat Creek and Rucker Run. All four waterways are on the state’s “Dirty Waters List.”

The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1nHmBjB ) reports that the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality recently hosted a community meeting on the plan in Roseland. Nesha McRae with the department told the gathering that the biggest sources of bacteria are straight pipes and failing septic systems that allow human waste to end up in the water.
