MARC will consider expanding weekend service

WASHINGTON — MARC has been pleased with the results of its expansion of Penn Line service to the weekends, particularly during cherry blossom season.

So planner Diane Ratcliffe predicts that weekend service could one day come to the Brunswick Line. “That broadens our market as far as weekend service,” she says.

It would require working with CSX, which owns the tracks.

There isn’t much chance of weekend service coming to the VRE, says CEO Doug Allen.

VRE needs to fix congestion at the bridge crossing the Potomac before they could even consider weekend service, Allen says. And that process could take decades, and cost a lot of money.

Allen calls it “not a near-term thing at all.”
