Britain’s McDonnell wins WBA bantamweight title

LONDON (AP) — British boxer Jamie McDonnell won the vacant WBA bantamweight title with a 10th-round knockout of Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Fighting on the undercard of the Carl Froch-George Groves bout for the WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles, McDonnell sent Na Rachawat to the canvas with a left hook to the face and the Thai boxer failed to answer the count.

McDonnell was stripped of his IBF belt in October last year for failing to arrange a mandatory defense of his title. He improved to 24-2-1 with 11 knockouts, while Na Rachawat fell to 52-3 (34KOs).

The 28-year-old McDonnell says “this means everything, this gets things back on track. I am world champion again.”
