Jets center Slater has hip surgery

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Winnipeg Jets center Jim Slater has undergone hip surgery and is expected back for training camp in September.

General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff issued a statement Friday about the operation to fix a problem diagnosed after the season ended. Cheveldayoff said: “Jim Slater underwent successful hip labrum surgery.”

The surgery was performed by Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hip Preservation Center in New York.

Slater has had a difficult couple of seasons with the Jets. Injuries limited his playing time to 26 games in 2012-13 and 27 last season, when he was sidelined by a hernia.
