Longtime U.Va.-Wise police officer named chief

WISE, Va. (AP) — The new chief of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise Police Department is a veteran member of the force.

Ronnie L. Shortt will replace Steve McCoy, who is retiring.

Shortt has been a sergeant for the past three years. He joined the department in 1992 as a patrolman.

U.Va.-Wise Chancellor Donnie Price Henry says Shortt is a strong leader with a wealth of law enforcement experience.

Shortt also is a member of the Wise County Board of Supervisors.
