Jaguars sign rookie LB Telvin Smith to contract

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville linebacker Telvin Smith became the fifth Jaguars’ draft pick to sign with the team.

Smith, a fifth-round pick, signed Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not released. Smith might have gone higher in the draft, but he had a diluted urine sample at the NFL Combine and is now a part of the league’s drug testing program.

Smith only started one season at Florida State, but the Jaguars coached the 6-foot-3, 218-pound linebacker at the Senior Bowl and liked how he performed.

Smith is expected to contend with another former FSU standout, Dekoda Watson, for the starting spot at weakside linebacker.

Smith’s signing leave just the team’s top four draft picks unsigned, including quarterback Blake Bortles, second-round selections Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson and third round pick Brandon Linder.
