DNA leads to charges in 1992 Richmond slaying

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A DNA sample has led to the indictment of a suspect in the 1992 slaying of a Richmond man.

The Richmond Metropolitan Multijurisdiction Grand Jury charged 49-year-old Mark Anthony Fife with first-degree murder, robbery and burglary.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1mjOSr0 ) reports that a bloodstain on a curtain in Meador Clay Perdue’s home matched Fife’s DNA. Perdue was fatally beaten on Sept. 20, 1992.

Richmond police detective Mark Williams and forensic technician Kendall Barlow found the curtain in an evidence box while going through old homicide files. They sent to it to the state lab to determine whether the blood matched the DNA of any felons.

Fife pleaded guilty in February to possession of a firearm by a felon. He is serving three years in the Richmond City Jail.
