WASHINGTON — A 65-year-old woman died after a Virginia house fire on Memorial Day despite what officials call heroic actions of her neighbors.

Upon noticing smoke and fire at Amy Jo Walsh Jones’ Fauquier County home around 8 a.m. on Monday, neighbors who knew Jones was still inside rushed to get her and brought to the backyard where they performed CPR until emergency crews arrived, according to a news release.

Jones died shortly after.

Jones lived with her father, who was home at the time and is currently being cared for by the American Red Cross.

The release called Jones’ neighbors efforts heroic and say they are to be commended.

Two family pets were also lost in the fire.

Fauquier County Sheriff’s office says an autopsy will be conducted Tuesday and the cause of the fire does not appear suspicious.
