Train accident kills at least 20 in north India

NEW DELHI (AP) — Officials say at least 20 people have been killed in a train collision in northern India.

Officials say an express train traveling at a high speed slammed into a parked freight train in an eastern district of Uttar Pradesh today, causing six cars of the passenger train to derail.

Rescuers are working to free people trapped under toppled cars and debris.

A railway official says at least 50 people were injured, including the express train’s driver and assistant driver, who are in critical condition.

Authorities are searching for the station master, who disappeared after the accident

Accidents are common on India’s railroad network, and most are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
