MADRID (AP) — Officials say three Spanish military airmen have been injured in a restaurant grenade attack in the tiny African country of Djibouti.
The Defense Ministry says a sergeant and two corporals with Spain’s air force were wounded Saturday night at the cafe packed with soldiers of various nationalities.
The ministry says in a statement they suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were being treated at a French military hospital.
An air force plane took off Sunday from Madrid’s Torrejon air base to evacuate them. The ministry did not say if soldiers of other nationalities were hurt or if there were suspects.
Spain participates in a European Union anti-piracy operation in Djibouti to protect international shipping.
It maintains more than 100 military in intelligence and surveillance missions of Somalia’s coast and the Indian Ocean.
