UN says peacekeeper killed in North Darfur region

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations says a peacekeeper from Rwanda has been killed following a failed mediation attempt between two groups of armed men in Sudan’s troubled North Darfur region.

The U.N. press office said Secretary-General condemned the killing of the Rwandan peacekeeper Saturday morning near the townof Kabkabiya in North Darfur. The U.N. says three more peacekeepers were injured following the failed attempt to mediate a dispute between two groups of armed men believed to be Arab and Fur tribesmen. They are receiving treatment at medical facilities run by the U.N. peacekeeping mission.

Darfur has been gripped by bloodshed since 2003 when rebels took up arms against the government in Khartoum, accusing it of discrimination and neglect.
