Kulwicki family members announce driver program

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Family members of late Sprint Cup champion Alan Kulwicki have begun a driver development program they hope to have running next season.

Relatives of the 1992 series champ announced the Kulwicki Driver Development Program on Wednesday. Kulwicki’s step mother, Thelma Kulwicki, said the program was a way to help worthy drivers who might not have the means to reach their dreams of racing.

The nonprofit organization will provide financial support for things such as a racer’s operational expenses, entry fees, transportation and equipment. The group also plans to bring resources like sponsorships, industry networking and business education to teams learning about those aspects of racing.

Alan Kulwicki died in a plane crash in April 1993. Thelma Kulwicki says Alan would be all for helping racers get chances to succeed.
