Padres GM: No surgery recommended for Cashner

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Padres general manager Josh Byrnes says team doctors indicate that San Diego pitcher Andrew Cashner has soreness and irritation in his right elbow.

Cashner, the team’s opening day starter, went on the 15-day disabled list Saturday and had an MRI performed on his elbow by Padres doctors Monday. Byrnes says in a statement that the club will proceed with rest and rehabilitation for Cashner’s recovery, based on the recommendation of team doctors.

There was no mention of surgery.

Cashner is 2-5 with a 2.35 ERA in nine starts. The right-hander has 47 strikeouts in 57 1-3 innings.
