NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Norfolk will pay more than $3 million to settle a lawsuit that claimed the city owed about 900 current and former police officers overtime pay.

The federal class-action lawsuit alleged that the officers were forced to clean their weapons, arrive early for court and perform other duties on their own time without pay.

City Attorney Bernard Pishko tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1gM2xE5 ) that the city maintains it didn’t do anything wrong. He says city officials settled the case to avoid exposure to the cost of litigation and what he calls “the inconvenience to both leadership and operational personnel.”

An attorney representing the officers, Jamie Shoemaker, says the officers are pleased to have the matter resolved.

The settlement is subject to approval by the court.
