Va. localities get state agriculture grants

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has awarded three grants aimed at strengthening the state’s agriculture and forestry industries.

McAuliffe awarded the planning grants from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund on Wednesday.

Franklin County received a $15,000 grant to help Ferrum College implement a plan to make locally produced food a part of the county’s economic development strategy.

The city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County is getting $35,000 for a business plan for a flash freezing and light food processing hub for food bound for institutional customers such as the University of Virginia, Virginia Area Agencies on Aging and specialty grocery retailers.

Pittsylvania County got a $10,000 grant to conduct a feasibility study focused on attracting integrated poultry companies to the county.
